A man who spiked candy with tranquilliser and distributed them to minors at a youth camp in the region has pleaded guilty to sexual crimes against two children who were nine and ten years old.

'Candy game'

Mary Prior KC, handling the case, detailed the defendant's actions to the legal proceedings.

She stated his those affected were under-privileged children who were staying at a summer camp which he operated.

Ruben played a "sweet game" with the minors, Mrs Prior said, in which he would access the sleeping quarters when they were getting ready for bed and request they to eat sweets "rapidly".

She told the court Ruben had played this game with the children "over an extended period", and youngsters had earlier experienced illness the following morning.

She stated the defendant had been capable of justifying this over a long period as the children being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepchild had worries in July 2025.

The legal representative stated further: "This year his family member had suspicions about what was going on, justifiably.

"They decided to investigate in the individual's items."

The legal counsel stated items including baby oil, ointment and medical needles were located, and his stepchild contacted the law enforcement about his suspicions.

She explained the defendant continued to conduct the "candy game" with six youngsters that night - July 26th - and they were all ill the next day.

"Authorities" had not gone out by that time," she stated further.

The oversight body, the police conduct office, had stated that it was examining the police response of the incident.

Mrs Prior said the youngsters were having difficulty walking due to their sickness, so the stepson contacted the law enforcement once more.

She explained Ruben then conducted the "candy game" in a space of five children.
